Background The Shetland Sheepdog is a popular breed of dogs in Sweden. The breed is mostly used as a companion dog and is also popular within certain dog sports such as agility. The Shetland Sheepdog is not included in any breeding programs regarding joint health. The animal insurance company, Agria had recently informed the Swedish Shetland Sheepdog Club (SSSK) that they had noted an increasing number of arthritis in the elbow joints, therefore they wanted to exclude elbow joints from the insurance until SSSK started a breeding program against elbow dysplasia. After the start of this study Agria withdrew their demand, but the study went on as planned. Aims of this study The aims of this study was to investigate if there is any data that may show if there is a larger or smaller reason than before to suspect that the breed has a problem with elbow dysplasia and therefore would benefit from a breeding program regarding this.

Njurarna är två viktiga multifunktionella organ och alla sjukdomar som ger njurpåverkan kan resultera i nedsatt njurfunktion. Hur stort bortfall av njurfunktionen som åsamkats har betydelse för individens välmående och överlevnad, varför det är viktigt att tidigt upptäcka och behandla sjukdomen. Ärftliga njursjukdomar är i de flesta fall progressiva och i slutändan fatala. En ökad medvetenhet och kunskap om ärftliga njursjukdomar kan genom möjligheterna till ett förbättrat avelsarbete bidra till minskat lidande och ökad välfärd hos individerna i drabbade hundraser. I en ännu opublicerad svensk studie identifieras bl.a. raserna Shetland Sheepdog (SHS) och cavalier king charles spaniel (CKCS) som två av raserna med högst incidens av njursjukdom. Dessa två raser omnämns dock sällan som särskilt drabbade i den veterinärmedicinska litteraturen. Examensarbetets syfte var att utifrån journaler från två stora svenska djursjukhus (Evidensia Södra Djursjukhuset och Universitetsdjursjukhuset, Sveriges Lantbruksuniversitet) beskriva vilka njursjukdomar som diagnosticerats hos dessa raser samt undersöka om någon sjukdom verkade förekomma mer frekvent. Genom sökningar på njursjukdomsspecifika diagnoskoder i djursjukhusens journaldatabaser så återfanns de individer som senare inkluderades i studien.

Laminitis is a debilitating disease causing much suffering to horses and ponies all over the world. It is manifested in the hooves as a mechanical failure of the suspensory apparatus between the hoof capsule and the distal phalanx. Due to the weight of the horse the disease may result in a dislocation of third phalanx. Six healthy standardbred trotters were used in this study on whether standardbreds tolerate forced recumbency as well as Shetland ponies. Recumbency was induced pharmacologically but maintained only by lowering the ceiling height of the box to a height of approximately 125 ? 140 % of the horse´s thoracic height.

Inbreeding has become a problem in some horse breeds. Studies show that it may lead to inbreeding depression which affects e.g. reproduction traits. In the wild there are mechanisms that make horses avoid mating with close relatives. When selection is done by humans this mechanism is removed and intensive breeding for a few traits, for example good racing results, can become a problem.

Ataxi är då hunden har svårt att koordinera sina rörelser och orsakas av att nervsystemet inte fungerar som det ska och degenereras. Degeneration av cerebellum och då specifikt purkinjecellerna och granulacellerna ger en form av ataxi kallat cerebellär ataxi. Denna typ av ataxi uppvisas genom att hunden (Canis lupus familiaris) står bredbent, har muskelkramper, obalanserad gång och ögonrullningar. Den genetiska bakgrunden till cerebellär ataxi hos hund finns beskriven hos flera raser, däribland beagle, finsk stövare, old english sheepdog, gordonsetter och coton de tuléar. Hos alla dessa raser nedärvs sjukdomen autosomalt recessivt och de orsakande mutationerna ger olika dysfunktioner inom nervcellerna som gör att de inte kan fungera som de ska och degenereras.

The search for antibiotic compounds from the natural environment has been going on for seven decades, ever since penicillin entered the market and antibiotic treatments became routine. The evolutionary pressure put on the pathogenic microorganisms induced a rapid spreading of naturally occurring resistance genes, leaving only the option of finding new antibiotics to treat the resistant pathogens. Microorganisms have been extensively mined for their biosynthetic abilities to produce biologically active compounds. To date, more than 23 000 microbial natural products have been discovered. The Actinomycetales are ubiquitous bacteria that have been used for antibiotic discovery for more than half a century, and over 10 000 natural products have been identified from the order.
